Looking Past Limitations

Limitations are what we see when we take our eyes off of the goal. Argue for your limitations and sure enough they are yours – Richard Bach. Should limitations stop us in our tracks? Are limitations a signal that we need to turn around and go home? What is on the other side of our limitations?

When we talk with God we pray for blessings and peace and God’s protection and healing and for God to take away the pain. When we see challenges, we see limitations and we let them stop us. We make up all matter of excuses to ourselves as to why we can’t move forward. We ALL do it.

I can hear some of you talking now. “Well come on Stephen, there are REAL limitations out there.”

Let’s say you were in a horrible accident and you lost most of your right leg. It’s a terrible tragedy. Of course you would never be able to walk again with crutches or some sort of support. Right? Right? Wrong! I saw a man, with one leg and a prosthetic (man-made leg), who was ice skating! He didn’t have crutches. He was ice skating with his daughter and they both had the biggest smiles on their faces. What a fantastic moment!

Limitations are what we see when we take our eyes off the goal.

Still don’t believe me? Okay. Here is a talk that will challenge you. Caroline Casey asks us to move beyond the limits we may think we have. This talk is from TED.com. Its length is 15:34. This presentation is jaw dropping. I was totally blown away by it. You really need to watch this. Here is a link: http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/caroline_casey_looking_past_limits.html

What a GREAT talk from Carolyn Casey!

Everyone has trials and challenges. Most people don’t like to talk about their trials. Most people are afraid of their trials. Look at Romans 8 verse 15. “Fear always tells you what you’re not, what you don’t have, what you can’t do, and you never will be.” Most people see their trials as limitations and fear stops them. Look past the limitations and see the opportunities!

Here are some of the lyrics to a song called Blessings that Laura Story sings.

All the while, You hear each spoken need
Yet love us way too much to give us lesser things
‘Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know You’re near
What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise

What we should be praying for is to look past our limitations and see God more clearly, to know him more dearly. We should be praying for growth. When we clearly see the end of our strength and our abilities, that is not a signal to stop! That is an opportunity to see God working!

Limitations are what we see when we take our eyes off of the goal.
Limitations are what we see when we take our eyes off of God.
How are you limiting yourself today? Let Go and Let God!
