How can I experience the freedom that God has promised (overview)?

“It’s not enough to aim; you must hit.” Italian Proverb

With bow in hand, I carefully aim my arrow at the target. Still, nothing will happen till I shoot the arrow. Do I have plans? Or, am I doing?

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” James 1:22

Once I let the arrow fly towards the target, I open up the door for me to learn. If I miss the target, I can learn how to aim better. If I hit the target, I can move back for a greater challenge at hitting the target. Either way, I now know what it is that I need to learn. And, in learning how to effectively shoot the arrow, I discover real freedom.

“But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.” James 1:25

What is freedom? “What light is to the eyes – what air is to the lungs – what love is to the heart, liberty is to the soul of man.” Robert Green Ingersoll

What is real freedom? God doesn’t want me to just aim, He wants me to know what I’m shooting at and then shoot. In other words, God doesn’t want me to merely look at the water, he wants me to know where I’m going to swim and start swimming. Once I start swimming towards my destination, then God will show me how well He takes care of me which increases my trust in Him. Not only that, He will show me how willing He is to bless me with His power so that I can accomplish what I want to accomplish. And, that increases my hope. Then, as I experience more and more and persevere and fight for it, then I experience the law of liberty. That’s how I experience God’s freedom.

What do you want to do? What do you keep putting off? Is it teaching Sunday school, sports, singing, acting, feeding the poor, missions trip, running that committee, serving, greeting, etc.? What’s your heart asking for that your mind keeps saying no to?

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.” James 1:22-25
